Proving that a life lived in fear is a life half lived, it was reported last week that following a U.K. production of Strictly Ballroom the Musical in 2016, another production of the show will take its bow in Canada in mid-2017.
The production is slated to open at the Mirvish Theatre in Toronto in a May/April time slot next year, but no details of a creative team or casting have yet been announced. Also unannounced are any details regarding rewrites or further changes to the show, which according to our reviews of previous Australian seasons, is an absolute must for the material to thrive in front of further audiences (especially if the Canada season is doubling as a pre-Broadway trial.)
Following the story of a championship ballroom dancer and the woman who teaches him how to break free of the expectations that bind them both in a Luhrmann-ised version of 1980s Australia, the musical is based on Baz Luhrmann’s hit film of the same name.
AussieTheatre.com wishes the expat production nothing but the heartiest of chookas for long and critically celebrated international seasons.
“Love is a leap of faith”, and we are glad to see material created on our shores making that leap.
