State Theatre Company of South Australia announces 2010 season

State Theatre Company Artistic Director Adam Cook has announced the eight plays in the Company’s 2010 season to a crowd of industry guests and subscribers at the Adelaide Convention Centre, promising an entertaining and stimulating year of theatre events ahead.

“Season 2010 offers a positive feast of pleasure-packed crowd-pleasers, visionary artists celebrating the wonders of the human imagination and exploring the tragic and hilarious twists of fate that beset us all as we journey down the long and winding road of life,” said Cook.

“Combining the greatest playwrights of the past – Miller, Orton, Shakespeare – with some of the freshest contemporary writers working in the theatre today, Season 2010 promises to lift your spirits and enliven the life of the mind.”

The season will commence with Michael Gow’s Toy Symphony, a rare insight into the heart and mind of the artist and the inescapable power of memory.

Adelaide audiences will be treated to a musical feast of Motown hits when The Sapphires, the award-winning play by actor/playwright Tony Briggs, graces the Scott Theatre stage as part of the 2010 Adelaide Festival of Arts, starring one of Australia’s most successful recording artists, Christine Anu.

Prolific American writer Arthur Miller’s penetrating family drama The Price opens in June, followed by 2009 Education Program show The 7 Stages of Grieving by two of Australia’s leading Indigenous theatre artists, Wesley Enoch and Deborah Mailman in the Space Theatre, followed by performances in outer metropolitan and regional centres.

July will see the sexy and witty British black comedy Entertaining Mr Sloane by Joe Orton, starring one of Australia’s best loved leading ladies, Jacki Weaver. William Shakespeare’s classic tale of the two star-crossed lovers, romeo&juliet will be dynamically re-imagined in August.

Adelaide audiences will have the opportunity to see one of the decade’s most celebrated plays in September with God of Carnage by Yasmina Reza with a cast including well-known Australian comedian and actor Kim Gygnell.

Season 2010 will close with hit Australian play The Give and Take by Tony McNamara, a comedy that smartly satirizes parenting, the younger generation and a love that is strictly conditional and convertible to cash.
