Squabbalogic cancel ‘Freckleface Strawberry’

In a statement sent to email subscribers, Squabbalogic announced their cancellation of a planned June/July production of children’s show Freckleface Strawberry the Musical due to budgetary constraints.

In the email, Squabbalogic said:

Whilst we could not be more proud of the artistic achievements of our recent productions of Triassic Parq, Grey Gardens and The Original Grease – not to mention the enthusiastic response of our audiences – the truth is each of these shows did not achieve budget benchmarks and suffered considerable losses which leave Squabbalogic in a very precarious position.

As Freckleface Strawberry was for a whole new audience unfamiliar to us, coupled with the expense of the production against the potential of breaking even, we have decided to make a very tough but sensible decision to withdraw the season and use the upcoming time to recalibrate our future aims and financial position.

Squabbalogic still plan to go ahead with The Dismissal, the company’s first original piece, centered around the dismissal of the Whitlam government in 1975. A workshop of the work while in development is planned, and will be accessible to friends of the company.

This is Squabbalogic’s tenth year as a company and they have become an enduring and endearing member of the Sydney theatre landscape, producing offbeat boutique musical theatre.

The company is  set to go ahead with another Mystery Musical this year – their signature fundraising exercise, where the price of a ticket goes straight to their productions and gives you a reading of a musical to boot – in hopes of bringing the company a little more financial support.
