South Pacific has its first preview at The Princess Theatre in Melbourne tonight, exactly 60 years and roughly 300 metres from its original Australian debut.
On the 13 September 1952, the show opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre, where it was considered a resounding success, receiving 20 minutes of standing ovations and speeches on opening night.
Continuing the tradition Opera Australia’s current production of South Pacific is more than holding its own. It’s recent season at the Sydney Opera House was the most successful, in terms of ticket sales, ever to grace the building. The sell out season was attending by over 54,000 people in its five week run.
As reported on AussieTheatre the show has also been filmed for DVD and Cinema. While no details about the release date are currently available we are sure that it will be greeted with similar enthusiasm when it does hit the screen.
The show will officially open its Melbourne season on Saturday night and currently no closing date has been set. A Brisbane season has been announced for late December before returning to the Sydney Opera House in the second half of 2013.
Tickets are currently available for Melbourne, Brisbane and the return Sydney season at SouthPacificMusical.com.au

BEAUTIFUL SHOW in the wrong theatre (seating very tight, no space for your knees, for this reason alone I will not see the show, I will stick to my dvd, with Mitzy Gaynor and cast, sorry!
I'm short, so close seating wont be an issue - really looking forward to getting there and seeing this cast!
Saw show last night...good talent, tight and perfect in technique, but I was bored as it lacked energy somewhere, didn't have oomph. Loved the scenery and costumes.
