Showqueen Turns One

After a glorious start on August 10, 2008, the weekly Sunday night cabaret showcase Showqueen Sundays has just celebrated its first anniversary. With more than 45 performances and a Melbourne season at Chapel Off Chapel, Showqueen Sundays has showcased the talents of over 150 cabaret artists, created a new CD (with a second on the way) and drawn thousands of people to the Supper Club, Taylor Square, where it plays every Sunday night.

Creator and Producer, Trevor Ashley (pictured) said: “This is one of the best things I have been able to do in my career so far. Showqueen not only showcases the talents of headline acts, but also gives young, up-and-coming cabaret artists the opportunity to strut their stuff alongside the pros. Our first CD is a fantastic taste of some of our best and most popular performers, and has had critical acclaim.”

Performers who have filled the tine Supper Club stage over the past year include Alison Jiear, Paul Capsis, Toni Lamond, Hayden Tee, iOTA, Margi de Ferranti, Virginia Gay, John O’May, Mitchell Butel, Genevieve Lemon, Chelsea Plumley, Phil Scott, Lucinda Shaw, Avigail Herman, Nick Christo and David Harris, plus the casts of musicals like Guys And DollsPriscilla Queen Of The DesertChicago,The Rocky Horror Show and Gutenberg The Musical.

Trevor Ashley, together with musical director Bev Kennedy, continues to host and perform Sunday with a bevy of special guests. The intimate surrounds of the Supper Club and the strong industry following make it one of Sydney’s cult secrets.

In the coming weeks there will be performances by:

QUEENIE VAN DE ZANDT with her new show The Best (and Worst) Of Queenie van de Zandt (August 16)

The fabulous and irrepressible MARK TREVORROW returns with Bev and the Beverages (the house band) to feature songs from his album It’s About Time (August 23).
