Robin Fox announced as 2025 Artist in Residence at Melbourne Recital Centre

Melbourne Recital Centre proudly announces the appointment of internationally acclaimed audio-visual artist Robin Fox as its 2025 Artist-in-Residence. Fox, the co-founding director of Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS), brings his groundbreaking approach to electronic music and visual artistry to one of Australia’s premier performance venues.

Known for his revolutionary audio-visual laser works that synchronise sound and visual electricity in hyper-amplied 3D space, Fox has performed in more than 60 cities worldwide.

His recent work TRIPTYCH, which premiered at Unsound Krakow in late 2022, was awarded the prestigious Isao Tomita Special Prize at Ars Electronica 2023.

Fox:

Being chosen as artist-in-residence at the Melbourne Recital Centre is such a meaningful recognition for me as an artist. I love that the Recital Centre has such a wide open door – welcoming all genres of music. It’s exciting to create something that surprises people, especially those who might not have ever listened to electronic compositions before.

Marshall McGuire, Director of Programming at Melbourne Recital Centre:

Each year, we’re proud to present the Artist-in-Residence program as one of the many ways Melbourne Recital Centre supports outstanding Australian artists. We look forward to working with Robin in 2025 to help bring even more of his innovative ideas to life.

As Artist-in-Residence, Fox will have access to the Centre’s state-of-the-art facilities to experiment with and explore new sonic territories. His rst performance as part of the residency will be TRIPTYCH, an iconoclastic audio-visual performance that demonstrates his mastery of mechanical synaesthesia – a phenomenon in which someone experiences things through their senses in an unusual way – through custom-built hardware. Uniquely mapped to each performance venue, TRIPTYCH will transform the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall into a hypnotic fusion of high-art techno, sonic mass, and buzzing electronica.

Fox Explained:

Major audiovisual experiences such as TRIPTYCH are as much about the music as they are about the powerful connection between sound and light

I always try and create something sublime and beautiful in my performances, and despite being loud I never want them to feel aggressive – rather something that’s so overwhelming that you have kind of a religious experience.

Fox holds a PhD in composition from Monash University and an MA in musicology. In 2016, he established MESS (Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio), a not-for-prot organization dedicated to providing public access to electronic musical instruments.

Additional performances and projects will be announced throughout 2025. Launched in 2017, Melbourne Recital Centre’s Artist-in-Residence program is a key part of the Centre’s commitment to supporting innovation and inclusion in music.

Robin Fox will present TRIPTYCH at the Elizabeth Murdoch Hall on Thursday, January 30 2025.
