Rob Mills to star in The Last Five Years

When I first heard the music to The Last 5 Years, I did three things:

1. I cried (nay, sobbed)
2. Bought the CD and ordered the vocal selections from Colony Music in New York online (and waited an excruciating 2 months for postage)
3. Told everyone I knew about the discovery I had made.

This. Is. A. Beautiful. Show.

For those who don’t know, the show is a compelling one act musical, composed by Jason Robert Brown (Songs For A New World, Parade, 13), which tells the story of a young couple’s 5 year relationship.

A musical about a relationship…What is so clever and compelling about that, you ask? It’s all in the delivery: Jason Robert Brown plays with time, and tells ‘Her’ story from the end of their relationship, backwards, while ‘His’ story begins at their first date and plays through in chronological sequence.

This month, this wonderful musical is coming to Sydney, performed by two of Australia’s leading artists, Rob Mills and Marika Aubrey.

Direct from the role of Fiyero in the Australian production of Wicked, Mills will star as Jamie, the up-and-coming young writer and award-winning cabaret star Marika Aubrey will take the role of Cathy, following her sell-out performances of Redheadin New York City and at The Adelaide Cabaret Festival.

As stated in the media release: “This raw, enchanting and bittersweet production captures some of the most heartbreaking and uplifting moments of modern romance. A poignant look at a modern relationship from the thrill of infatuation and the blossoming of a new love, through to the end. The Last Five Years will appeal to anyone who has ever been, or ever hopes to be, in love.”

I couldn’t agree more.

The Last Five Years will be presented as part of ‘The Reginald Season’ – a program of curated works by some of Australia’s best small and emerging performance companies, presented by The Seymour Centre. Named for the renowned Sydney philanthropist Mr. Everest Reginald York Seymour, who left the original bequest for the Seymour Centre, season of works is funded by Arts NSW, and aims to support some of Australia’s most exciting up and coming companies, as well as present new and experimental productions from established arts organisations.

In honour of this generous benefactor, the Seymour has also renamed its Downstairs Theatre space The Reginald Theatre.

The show, Produced by independent theatre company Stories Like These, will be directed by Luke Rogers, and features the talents of musical director Mark Chamberlain.

The Last Five Years opens on Thursday July 14 and closes on July 30.
