Rare opportunity to see a new musical reimagining of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice

Melbourne Shakespeare Company will return to the Rose Garden this December, revitalising one of Shakespeare’s rarely produced comedies; The Merchant of Venice. This innovative reimaging combines the rich language of the iconic play with the vibrant energy of musical theatre, and is guaranteed to dazzle audiences with a hilarious and unforgettable experience.

After their critically acclaimed 2023 production of Julius Caesar broke box office records and accomplished a sell-out season before opening night, this daring young company has proven themselves as one of the most exciting independent theatre companies in Australia. Early booking is recommended to secure seats for Melbourne Shakespeare Company’s new highly anticipated production.

On The Merchant of Venice, director Ben Margalith:

It’s extremely funny,” and that it holds a special place in his heart. “At its core, [the play] is a standard ‘by the book’ Shakespearean comedy: the villain’s plans get foiled, the lovers get married, and everyone lives happily ever after” but as he explores the richness of the text “it allows [him] a rare instance to consider aspects of [his] own religious Jewish upbringing.” Ben, the son of a Rabi, is not one to shy away from a challenge and believes that The Merchant of Venice encourages us to examine our own biases – that it asks us “What would you do if given the chance to turn the tables on those oppressing you? At what point is forgiveness no longer an option?.

The pivotal role of Shylock will be played by Shelley Krape, who will explore Shylock as more than a villain. Ben and Shelley aim to shape Shylock as a ”successful self-made entrepreneur; a Jewish mother in a society that labels her an outcast; and in the male-dominated world of the venetian Rialto, she is a pillar of wealth and power.

Starring alongside Krape are Eleni Vettos (Love’s Labour’s Lost) as Portia and Connor Sweeney (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) as Launcelot Gobbo and Orion Carey-Clark (Much Ado About Nothing) as Bassanio. Audience favourite Chris Broadstock (Merry Wives of Windsor) returns as Antonio, and we introduce Takudzwa Alois Chipangura as The Duke in his professional debut.

The Merchant of Venice is suitable for audiences of all ages and guests are encouraged to pack a picnic – join us & enjoy the sunshine! Seating is provided at the venue and protective sun wear is recommended for matinee performances.
