Between 12 April and 25 May, Peppa and her friends will be performing their lively new production in a variety of Aussie cities—Frankston, Brisbane, Melbourne, Bendigo, Geelong, Adelaide, Newcastle, Sydney, and Perth. It’s not simply an encore from Peppa’s last Down Under tour (which sold out back in 2018) but a revamped show that’s fresh off a triumphant run in London’s West End.
PEPPA PIG’S FUN DAY OUT LIVE! promises more audience interaction, more memorable singalongs, and—crucially—brand-new puppets crafted specifically for Australian audiences. Richard Lewis, the UK-based writer-director, is the creative mind behind these new additions. He has overseen seven Peppa shows since first encountering the brand in 2007, and each time, he emphasises the same guiding principle: respect Peppa’s essential nature as a small child in a pastel, soothing world. “Yes, the juggernaut of Peppa is massive,” Richard concedes, “but Peppa herself is definitely not a juggernaut.” In other words, the show is acutely aware that children crave gentle pacing, not superhero-level chaos.
One might wonder how a stage show transitions from the West End to Aussie theatres without losing any of its exuberance. Enter TEG Life Like Touring. With over 15 years of experience producing and co-producing some of the world’s most popular entertainment brands—think PAW Patrol, FRIENDS, Dora the Explorer, and more—TEG Life Like Touring is a veteran in delivering polished family shows. Their productions have travelled through Australia, North America, the UK, Africa, Asia, New Zealand, Europe, the Middle East, and South America. This globe-trotting background means they know how to handle the practicalities of large-scale tours, from shipping set pieces to coordinating all-Australian casts who can replicate the show’s signature energy each night.
They’re joined by Fierylight, a London-based production company specialising in bringing high-profile children’s brands to life. Fierylight’s résumé is nothing short of impressive: TELETUBBIES, THE BFG, LAZYTOWN, THE OCTONAUTS, BEN & HOLLY’S LITTLE KINGDOM, SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS, and more recently, an Olivier-nominated version of THE SMARTEST GIANT IN TOWN. Their knack for family-friendly theatre is precisely why they’ve tackled multiple Peppa tours, perfecting the blend of childlike wonder and professional stagecraft.
Overseeing it all is Hasbro (NASDAQ: HAS), a global play and entertainment company committed to making the world a better place for children and families. With an extensive portfolio of around 1,500 brands, Hasbro delivers immersive experiences through consumer products, entertainment via their independent studio eOne, and award-winning tabletop and digital gaming from Wizards of the Coast. Named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere Institute, Hasbro frequently remains in constant contacts with fans. For Peppa Pig, that means a robust global infrastructure ensuring the character’s adventures reach households near and far with consistent quality.
While the branding behemoth of Peppa is formidable, Richard Lewis’s approach to staging ensures the show remains grounded in Peppa’s small-scale charm. “So many TV animations promote speed and action, with loud, dayglow colours and superpowers,” he observes. “That’s not how a two-to-four-year-old’s brain works.” Instead, Lewis emphasises that an “action sequence” in the Peppa universe might be something as simple as three ducks crossing the road. It’s a gentle, whimsical approach that respects a young child’s capacity to absorb and engage.
In PEPPA PIG’S FUN DAY OUT LIVE!, that means a storyline loaded with playful simplicity. Children get to see Peppa go to the zoo and the beach for a party, encountering the likes of George and Daddy Pig along the way. Audience interactivity is woven in throughout, whether it’s through easy-to-learn actions, simple songs, or stage sequences that encourage little ones to call out or clap along. “Why speak if you can show?” Richard muses, noting that sometimes a 20-minute episode on TV includes just 20 sentences. This philosophy translates beautifully to live theatre, where elaborate sets and puppetry can replace mountains of dialogue.
Aussies have a particular love affair with Peppa Pig. The show’s gentle humour, mild colour palette, and emphasis on everyday adventures resonate well with families who value the joy in small pleasures. Much like Peppa’s muddy puddles, an Australian childhood often involves messy, good-natured fun. And with the staggering success of Nick Jr’s airing of PEPPA PIG, it’s no surprise that the theme song racked up 165 million views in just six months in 2024.
The new staging also marks the third time Richard Lewis has directed Peppa in Australia (he last did so in 2017 for Peppa Pig’s Surprise). “One of the things I’ve learnt from directing Peppa all over the world,” he says, “is that a pre-schooler is a pre-schooler, no matter which continent they’re on.” He relishes returning to Aussie shores, where he has found local audiences especially eager to embrace the show’s gentle comedic flair and interactive style.
While PEPPA PIG’S FUN DAY OUT LIVE! already promises an ample helping of laughter and song, it’s hardly the only arrow in the show’s quiver. The production is also introducing new puppet characters, cleverly scaled to reinforce the sense that Peppa and George are diminutive in comparison to grown-ups like Daddy Pig or Mr Bull. The team’s obsession with size and perspective underscores their commitment to authenticity: a child’s worldview is shaped by noticing how massive everyday objects can look, and these puppet proportions help replicate that sense of awe.
Then there’s the musical angle. Toddlers might not be fussy about perfect pitch, but they love memorable tunes, and that’s precisely what the production aims to deliver. With repeated references to “easy to sing, catchy songs,” it’s clear the creative team wants kids—and possibly their parents—to leave the theatre humming. It’s an approach that has proven successful in the past, with previous Peppa tours prompting car-ride home renditions of the show’s signature tunes (much to the delight or mild exasperation of caregivers, depending on their tolerance for repeated ditties!).
Perhaps the real surprise is that behind the squeals, giggles, and pastel backdrops, Peppa Pig harbours subtle life lessons. Every episode—and presumably every stage moment—reinforces the idea of kindness, exploration, and imaginative play. Richard Lewis hopes audiences will appreciate that undercurrent, especially in a world where children’s media can veer towards rapid-fire action or jarring soundscapes. “They need time, imagery, and a sense of safety,” he explains. “We put this connection with the toddler at the heart of everything we do.”
It’s a philosophy that extends to how TEG Life Like Touring and Fierylight handle stage design. The sets are bright but not overwhelming, favouring pastel shades over neon brights. Scenes transition at a measured pace, giving young viewers time to process the story—something that can be overlooked in more frenetic family entertainment. The result is a live experience that mirrors the show’s gentleness while retaining all the fun of shared songs and comedic moments.
Ultimately, PEPPA PIG’S FUN DAY OUT LIVE! is more than a mere extension of the cartoon; it’s an immersive theatre experience that invites toddlers (and willing adults) to step into Peppa’s pastel-hued world. With a proven track record, a creative team that deeply respects the developmental needs of young children, and brand support from the likes of Hasbro, Fierylight, and TEG Life Like Touring, this production ticks all the boxes for a memorable family outing.
As tickets continue to vanish at a brisk pace, it’s clear that local audiences can’t wait to sing, laugh, and maybe even waddle along in imaginary muddy puddles with Peppa and George. There’s something heartwarming about a show that encourages kids to see the joy in small moments—a gentle reminder that the simplest pleasures can yield the biggest smiles. If the word “juggernaut” comes to mind when you think of Peppa Pig, be assured that once the lights dim and the stage brightens, you’ll find not a corporate machine, but a charming little pig who cherishes the wonders of everyday life. And that, perhaps, is why Peppa keeps rolling on.
