Opera FLIGHT takes off in Adelaide next month

Making its Australian premiere at Her Majesty’s Theatre in May, State Opera South Australia’s production of Flight is a masterpiece of modern opera, promising an evening of humour, poignancy, and breathtaking music for all.

Whether you are a devoted opera lover or discovering the art form for the first time, Flight is a  production that speaks to everyone. For seasoned audiences, it offers the wit and charm of a contemporary Marriage of Figaro.

For newcomers, it is immediately engaging— rich in human emotion, effortlessly relatable, and sung in English! Scottish Opera’s acclaimed production, directed by Stephen Barlow, brings to life Jonathan Dove’s luminous score and April de Angelis’ sharp, poetic libretto.

Inspired by the true story that influenced Steven Spielberg’s film The Terminal, Flight unfolds in an airport where ten strangers, stranded by a storm, reveal their dreams, fears, and secrets in a tapestry
of comedy and drama.

State Opera South Australia’s Artistic Director, Dane Lam, describes :

Flight as a rare gem. Flight captures the essence of humanity in its most vulnerable state, reminding us of our shared experiences. It’s a beautiful blend of comedy and pathos, and we’re thrilled to bring this timeless story to life in Adelaide.

At the heart of opera is the sheer beauty of the human voice. Like all operas, the cast of Flight performs without microphones to amplify their voices, filling the theatre with nothing but the power of their raw vocals. Featuring an outstanding cast led by countertenor James Laing, alongside Anna Voshege, Nina Korbe, Samuel Dale Johnson, and Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Flight soars under the baton of British conductor Charlotte Corderoy, who leads the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

With Adelaide Airport signing on as a major partner for Flight, Managing Director, Brenton Cox said it was a fitting performance to support one of the State’s pre-eminent arts organisations.

Mr Cox :

As an airport community, we understand the complexities and emotions tied to travel, although we hope our own customers never have to go through a similar experience! We’re fortunate to witness extraordinary interactions between strangers and loved ones on a daily basis, and I love how this opera showcases resilience and the connections that can form in unexpected circumstances.

Flight returns to Adelaide almost 20 years after its Australian premiere at the Adelaide Festival in 2006, with a powerful production never seen before in the Southern Hemisphere. This exclusive three-show season will be only in Adelaide, from 8-10 May 2025 at Her Majesty’s Theatre.
