Opera Australia has confirmed that open dance auditions for their upcoming production of The King And I will take place in Melbourne and Sydney over the next two weeks.
“Following the success of South Pacific, I’m enormously pleased to be back again working on this spectacular production with Opera Australia”, Rutherford told AussieTheatre.
“Given the setting of the piece, we’re really keen to meet as many dancers as possible from any Asian ethnicity in order to be true to the piece. Dancing the original Jerome Robbins choreography will surely be a highlight of any dancers career.”
Candidates for the Open Dance Call in Melbourne and Sydney can be of any Asian ethnicity with a playing age of 18-30 years and must have a strong ballet technique or traditional Asian dance skills. Bare feet or jazz shoes are appropriate for the dance call, and dance attire should be worn.
All candidates must also prepare a Rodgers and Hammerstein ballad (or similar) and may be asked to sing after the conclusion of the dance call.
Directed by Christopher Renshaw, this world famous, lavish production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical will commence rehearsals on March 10, 2014. The production is set to open at the Lyric Theatre QPAC on April 7, 2014 and will transfer to Melbourne’s Princess Theatre from June 7 and then to the Sydney Opera House from September 7.
