Online premiere of Firebird

Fine Lines Dance is proud to announce the online premiere of Firebird, a 25 minute dance film that explores the notion of internal fire as an immense driving force. Filmed exactly a year from Melbourne’s lockdown #2, in between lockdown #4 and #5, this beautiful film is a testament to the determination, passion and courage of artists living in COVID times.

Firebird is created by Katrina Rank, (director, choreographer, co-producer and performer), in collaboration with 20 mature dancers of Fine Lines Dance, the Victorian dance company of experienced, mature dancers and winner of the 2020 Australian Dance Awards for Outstanding achievement in Community Dance. Firebird takes the mythic creature of legend as its point of departure. An elemental being, the firebird is dangerously unpredictable and unreflexive. It stands apart, neither good nor bad. Fine Lines’ Firebird explores the notion of internal fire as an immense power, barely contained within physical form. This new work asks, what do we burn for and how can we move beyond desire?

Speaking about the film Dr Katrina Rank, Director, Fine Lines Dance, Says:

Firebird is a work about fire in the belly, that thing that catapults you forward, drives you to the edge of the abyss. My need to express myself through dance has never dissipated, if anything it has grown stronger as the years go on. This is interesting, because as my body ages and moves less conventionally [as a dancer] I am more inventive and courageous. I see this too in the Fine Lines community, a collaboration of mature dancers who continue to challenge the status quo, particularly who can dance, how, when and what about. They are brave. They proudly face the lens and present their unique physicality and stories. Firebird contains many birds. They all hold a fire that sears and scars and stays with you beyond the credits.

The film will be premiered online on Saturday 9 October 2021 at 7pm. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session facilitated by Julie Dyson AM, vice president of Ausdance National and viewers will be invited to engage with the film crew and ask them questions.

Firebird is grateful for the financial support of the City of Yarra, Australian Multicultural Community Services, Sport Australia and the many donors to our Australian Cultural Fund campaign. Our Australian Cultural Fund campaign is still running, with any donations between now and the end of the campaign going towards film festival entry fees and preparation for an ‘on the big screen’ showing of Firebird and our next project Joy when it is safe to do so.
