An Officer and a Gentleman previews begin

An Officer and a Gentleman - Amanda Harrison and Ben Mingay in rehearsals

The World Premiere cast, crew and creative team of the new musical An Officer and a Gentleman today performed the brand new musical in front of an audience for the very first time today.

Audiences today saw history in the making at the Lyric Theatre, Sydney, as the show began its preview season, poised for the the final tweaks ahead of an official opening night later this month.

Support from the industry has been strong on popular social media platforms Facebook and Twitter, with well wishes and congratulatory messages in abundance.

Rehearsals for the production began on 19 March at ABC studios in Ultimo, Sydney and the company transferred to the Lyric Theatre to begin technical rehearsals 2 weeks ago.

“We’ve been 2 weeks putting the show very very slowly together with the actors and moving parts”, said Director Simon Phillips, who has been working on this piece for nearly two and half years.

“I’m incredibly pleased with how it’s looking, it’s shaped up very beautifully”, he said.

Ben Mingay, Amanda Harrison, Alex Rathgeber and Kate Kendall lead the cast of 30 (including the four young boys in the role of Young Zack) in this iconic love story, adapted for the stage by original screenwriter Douglas Day Stewart and co-producer Sharleen Cooper Cohen.

The production will officially open on May 18.
