Now you can HEAR how good Queensland is! Queensland Symphony Orchestra brings together three homegrown music makers for a world premiere event: Queensland’s Finest

It’s the question everyone seems to be asking right now – how good is Queensland? On September 3 and 4, you can HEAR how good Queensland is, when Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) features three of Queensland’s brightest musicians, together for the first time.

Queensland’s Finest will be conducted by Dane Lam, who has performed to acclaim both here in Australia and overseas, and has received numerous standing ovations with QSO in QPAC’s Concert Hall. Featured is the world premiere of a new composition by talented young Queensland composer, Sebastian Lingane, who was the recipient of QSO’s 2019 Compose Project Award.

They are joined by famed Queensland pianist Jayson Gillham who won the Montreal International Music Competition in 2014, performing Beethoven’s Fourth Concerto with “absorbing and relentless elegance” (Montreal Gazette). Since then, he has only grown in stature as an interpreter of Beethoven’s piano concertos.

The multi-talented Sebastian Lingane is a percussionist, pianist, ukulele player, part-time accordionist, and composer. He had an eclectic youth as his family moved around to different countries; from Qatar, to Kazakhstan, to England, to Singapore, Turkey, Norway, and now back to Australia.

He started writing music in 2016 and was immediately successful. In 2017, Sebastian won first AND second place in the ASME QLD Young Composers Competition following another first place in the Darren Middleton Songwriting Competition. In 2018, he had multiple pieces premiered, including a full original score for the production of Hamlet and a string quintet piece.

In 2019, the world stage called after winning a place at the Artology Fanfare Competition, as a result the Australian Youth Orchestra played a piece he composed and in the same year he was awarded a scholarship with QSO to have more works performed with mentoring opportunities and in 2020, he started studying composition at the Griffith Conservatorium. As a composer he specialises in classical, jazz, electronic, and traditional.

Queensland Symphony Orchestra Chief Executive Craig Whitehead said championing Queensland talent was a core commitment of the Orchestra.

Queensland is home to some extraordinary musical talent and it’s QSO’s absolute privilege to collaborate with, and celebrate, this talent. To perform a world premiere, composed by a young Queenslander at the Concert Hall, in a year when so many orchestras cannot perform anything anywhere, is a very special experience.
