Next To Normal opens in Melbourne

The Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning musical Next To Normal begins tonight in Melbourne at the Arts Centre Playhouse.

The Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning musical Next To Normal begins tonight in Melbourne at the Arts Centre Playhouse, with a Gala Opening scheduled for Tuesday 3rd May.

One of the most talked about new shows on Broadway, Next to Normal makes its much anticipated Australian premiere tonight in Melbourne, presented by the Melbourne Theatre Company. The stellar cast features Matt Hetherington (Dan Goodman), Benjamin Hoetjes (Henry), Gareth Keegan (Gabriel “Gabe” Goodman), Kate Kendall (Diana “Di” Goodman), Bert LaBonté (Dr. Fine/Dr. Madden) and Christy Sullivan (Natalie Goodman).

Scheduled to run until 28th May in Melbourne, the play centres on Diana Goodman, a mother struggling with worsening bipolar disorder, and the affects her illness has on her shattered family. This emotion-drenched musical tackles the uncomfortable subject of manic depression, as well as delving into powerful subjects such as grief and loss, drug abuse, suicide and the ethics of modern psychiatry.

Following in the footsteps of hit contemporary musicals Rent and Spring Awakening, this electrifying production has captivated audiences in New York and is set to thrill the Australian public with its provocative lyrics and thrilling contemporary score.

Directed by Dean Bryant, musically directed by Matthew Frank and featuring a set designed by Richard Roberts, Next To Normal is one of the most anticipated pieces of musical theatre to arrive in Australia this year. Described by the New York Times as ‘The bravest and most surprising musical on Broadway’,

Information regarding an Australian Tour has been released at this time.
