New Theatre: An important update regarding future performances

Since we wrote to you last month, the situation for live theatre in Sydney has changed again, most significantly with the announcement overnight that the Sydney Fringe Festival has had to be cancelled due to the extension of the lockdown of Greater Sydney until 31 August.

Coming after the cancellation of last year’s festival, this is heart-breaking news. We extend our sympathies to Artistic Director Kerri Glasscock and her team who have been working so tirelessly over the past year to bring this wonderful festival to life. It’s a cruel blow indeed. Given this decision, and that the current lockdown renders rehearsals and production work impossible, New Theatre has sadly made the call to cancel our Sydney Fringe Festival season scheduled for September: the world premieres of two new Australian plays, THE PARK by Simon Thomson and THE CHOCOLATE ROSTER by Brooke Robinson. However, we are committed to presenting these two wonderful home-grown plays at some point in the future, and they’re definitely in the mix for our 2022 season, so watch the website for updates as the situation firms. So, our production schedule for the remainder of the year now consists of THE SPOOK by Melissa Reeves, a whimsical satire inspired by a true story of ASIO spies and regional Australia during the Cold War, which will play 12 October – 6 November, with Press Night on Wednesday 13 October. https://newtheatre.org.au/the-spook/

That will be followed by the Australian premiere of THE LOVELY BONES, a stage adaption by Bryony Lavery of Alice Sebold’s best-selling novel, which will play 16 November – 18 December with Press Night on Wednesday 17 November. https://newtheatre.org.au/the-lovely-bones/

We will also be announcing the winner of THE SILVER GULL PLAY AWARD for 2021 in late October, with rehearsed readings of excerpts from the shortlisted finalists. Entries for the award close 31 August. https://newtheatre.org.au/the-silver-gull-play-award-2021
