New Footage Reveals Ben Adler as The Fiddler Atop Theatre Royal Sydney

New video footage has captured Ben Adler in costume as the iconic Fiddler, standing high above Theatre Royal Sydney ahead of the first preview performance of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF on Friday, 31 July 2026.

The footage offers audiences a striking first glimpse of one of musical theatre’s most recognisable characters, with Adler appearing on the roof of the historic Sydney venue as the production prepares to begin its Australian premiere season.

 

The image of the solitary musician above the village is central to FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, symbolising the uncertainty faced by its characters as they attempt to balance tradition, family and a rapidly changing world.

The new Australian production arrives following record-breaking, sold-out seasons in London and across the United Kingdom. After opening in Sydney, the critically acclaimed production will travel to Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.

Leading the company as Tevye is Australian and West End performer Troy Sussman, whose stage career has spanned more than four decades. Tevye, a poor milkman living in the village of Anatevka, must contend with changing customs as his daughters begin to challenge the traditions that have long shaped their family and community.

Australian screen and stage favourite Sigrid Thornton will play Yente, marking her first starring role in a musical in more than a decade. She will be joined by Australian theatre and television legend John Waters as Lazar Wolf.

Featuring music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and a book by Joseph Stein, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF remains one of the world’s most celebrated musicals. Its enduring score includes Tradition, Matchmaker, Matchmaker, If I Were a Rich Man and Sunrise, Sunset.

Blending humour, romance and heartbreak, the musical follows Tevye and his family as political and social pressures begin to transform life in their close-knit community. Its exploration of identity, resilience and the tension between tradition and progress has helped the story resonate with audiences across generations.

The release of Adler’s rooftop footage provides a fitting introduction to the Australian season, bringing one of the production’s defining visual motifs to the Sydney skyline before the curtain rises.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF plays at Theatre Royal Sydney from 31 July 2026, before continuing to Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.
