Music Theatre International (Australasia) is proud to announce the addition of the acclaimed new Australian musical BLOOM to its licensing catalogue, further strengthening its commitment to championing outstanding homegrown musical theatre works.
With book and lyrics by Tom Gleisner (The Castle, Thank God You’re Here, Have You Been Paying Attention) and music by Katie Weston (Die Bully Die, Falling Forward), BLOOM has captured audiences and critics alike following its successful seasons with Melbourne Theatre Company and Sydney Theatre Company. This earned the pair the 2024 Green Room Award for Best Writing for a New Australian Musical (Commercial).
Set in Pine Grove aged-care home, the facility manager offers university students free board in exchange for volunteering as carers. The manager doesn’t expect the lazy and inexperienced Finn Bailey to apply for the position. Finn clashes with his overworked carer Ruby and soon sets off a raucous chain of events involving romance, rebellion and a residents’ choir.
Originally produced by Working Dog, the 2025 MTC & STC seasons featured Australian stage and screen icons John Waters and Christie Whelan Browne, joined by Evelyn Krape, Vidya Makan, Maria Mercedes, Eddie Muliaumaseali’i, John O’May, Christina O’Neill, Jackie Rees and Slone Sudiro.
MTI Australasia’s Managing Director Stuart Hendricks:
We are incredibly excited to welcome BLOOM to the MTI catalogue. It is exactly the kind of bold, original Australian musical we are passionate about supporting. Expanding our Australian catalogue is a priority for us, and BLOOM is a wonderful addition that we know will connect strongly with performers and audiences across the region.
Book and lyrics writer Tom Gleisner:
We are so excited to have our musical BLOOM added to the amazing list of MTI works. It is a show we are so proud of, and we can’t wait to celebrate the next stage of its production journey.
Katie Weston, Composer:
There’s something incredibly special about seeing an original Australian musical take on a life beyond the original production. BLOOM is a story of growth, shared across generations, and I’m so excited to see it now head out into the world through MTI—and for this Australian story and score to take on new life everywhere.
