Melbourne youngsters invited to perform in Circa’s Carnival of the Animals

World class contemporary circus company Circa is inviting aspiring young talent to perform in its Melbourne run of Carnival of the Animals – a thrilling circus escapade inspired by Camille Saint-Saëns delightful salute to feathers, fur and fins, showing at Arts Centre Melbourne’s Playhouse from 16 – 23 September.

Exceptional participants from Melbourne will be invited to rehearse and join Circa’s professional acrobats for selected performances. The inclusion and engagement of youth is a relatively new endeavour for visionary Yaron Lifschitz, with this incredible re-imagining debuting on QPAC’s stages in 2022.

A rehearsal period in mid-2023 will identify a talented young group of stars who will train to join the Circa team as they tumble, leap, and spin their way through the wondrous worlds of the animal kingdom.

Circa Director, Yaron Lifschitz:

We were interested in not only making a show for young people but also with young people. There are incredible possibilities that arise when adding a new younger generation of circus artists to the world of Carnival of the Animals – the energy that is unleashed when the Circa ensemble works with these young performers is something to behold. They have a kind of freshness and an excitement that’s really terrific and I think energises the whole company

Circa is one of the world’s leading performance companies. Since 2004, from its base in Brisbane, Circa has toured the world – performing in 39 countries to over a million people. Circa’s works have been greeted with standing ovations, rave reviews and sold-out houses across six continents.

Lifschitz:

We’re thrilled to return to Melbourne. Arts Centre Melbourne has always been a great home for Circa and we feel that this show will really resonate with Melbourne audiences and families. We’re looking forward to bringing a new generation of circus artists in to the Circa fold as we integrate young artists into this performance working alongside the Circa ensemble,

We’ve had brilliant feedback on this special version of Carnival of the Animals. Younger audiences love to watch someone their own age on stage. There is general sense of excitement, fun, adventure, and then when those kids grow up, I hope they bring their children to the show.

The production will be presented as part of Arts Centre Melbourne’s year-round Families and Children Program. Launched in August 2009, it has grown in reputation to become a highly respected program nationally and internationally. Featuring intimate and large-scale theatre from some of the world’s most respected companies and a diverse range of interactive workshops, the program is robust and growing in size, scale, and scope.

A spellbinding and mesmerising performance… about wild imagination, explosions of magic and comical humour that speaks to everyone, especially children… a spectacle not be missed. – Brisbane Kids

Is there a more joyous sound than a roomful of children laughing and squealing with delight?” – In Daily
