Matt Okine Headlines Comedy Festival in Redfern

Comedy fans are counting down the days ’til showtime, as the multi-talented Matt Okine has been announced as the headline act at this year’s ITS Comedy Festival.

The festival, now in its fifth year, is thrilled to have the comedian, actor, presenter, rapper, and most recently published author, as a performer.

Okine, who left his role co-hosting Triple J Breakfast in 2016, is one of Australia’s hardest working comics. He has had a very busy year with the release of his first book Being Black ‘N Chicken, & Chips and filming the second season of his show The Other Guy which premieres on Stan in December.

“I’m really stoked to have Matt in the festival line up this year, I think he’s one of the best stand-ups Australia has ever produced and it means a lot that he’s come to do the show”, said ITS Artistic Director and Festival Co-Director, Carlo Ritchie.

The festival kicks off 27 November and is presented by Improv Theatre Sydney, a training centre that teaches improv, sketch and stand-up, all of which will be showcased across the four-night festival. The event is a celebration of five years for the company as well as an opportunity to showcase the superb talent that has come through the school including National Raw Comedy Winner, Bec Melrose, who will support Okine on night two.

The first night of the festival is at Improv Theatre Sydney, the city’s only purpose-built improv theatre.

Admission is free for the first night and then the celebration moves to the iconic independent arts venue, Giant Dwarf. Other notable acts include Tom Walker, fresh off his comedy special filmed for Amazon Prime, and ARIA Best Comedy Release Award Winner Bridie Connell.

Improv Theatre Sydney is a creative, inclusive and world-class school for students of improvisation; Sydney’s first and only dedicated improv theatre.

The performance ensemble and student alumni includes Alex Lee (The Checkout), Bridie Connell (ARIA award-winner, Tonightly), Sam Mac (Sunrise), Kyran Wheatley (triple j), Susie Youssef (The Project), as well as award-winning comedians Steen Raskopoulos and Carlo Ritchie (The Bear Pack), Tom Walker (MICF Award nominee), Bec Melrose (2018 Raw Comedy winner) and more.
