Matilda movie musical adaptation in the works
Get ready, maggots! Matilda The Musical is coming to the screen!
With music and lyrics by Australian Tim Minchin and book by Dennis Kelly, Matilda The Musical is a stage adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel of the same name, telling the story of a young girl with telekinetic powers.
A film version of the stage musical is in the works, with Matthew Warchus, the original production director, leading the creative team. The film is set to be produced by Working Title, the same team behind musical films such as Billy Elliot and Les Miserables.
Billboard have reported that Sony Pictures and Netflix are partnering up for the film’s release. There is also discussion for a theatrical and home video release in the UK, and a streaming deal on Netflix for a more global release. No dates have been confirmed or announced as of yet.
Filming is expected to begin in August 2020.
