In 2005, Lally Katz’s play Smashed made its debut in Melbourne and now the original Smashed team reunites to bring the show to Sydney. In September, Smashed will premiere in Sydney at SWB Stables Theatre, as a part of the Griffin Independent Season 2011.  The show is the fifth collaboration between Lally Katz and director Clare Watson, and was developed with actors Suzannah McDonald & Katherine Tonkin, based on an idea about the long-term friendship of two girls.  ‘Besties’ Ruby and Hazel are on the verge of adulthood: the future is bright & the past is a disco blur. With impossible high heels stalking through black holes, diva hair and a map to anywhere, these girls know how to play dress-up and how to make believe.
Smashed enjoys a delicate and unstable blend of humour and tragedy with an episodic script by Katz. Shifting through time, space and imagination with a confounding fluidity, the performance adopts an almost filmic means of moving between scenes and genres.  Playwright Lally Katz is well known and celebrated for her unique writing style and vivid imagination. Her play Neighbourhood Watch is currently showing at Belvoir Street Theatre (see AussieTheatre.com’s review here), and another of her works, Return To Earth, will premiere at the Melbourne Theatre Company later this year.
