La Boite Launches 2017 Season

La Boite Theatre 2017 Launch

Launching their 2017 Season, La Boite’s program focuses on Your Stories, Your Community & Your Theatre, reflecting their commitment to working with local artists as well as collaborating with a diverse range of companies around Australia.

“Each year we engage with new artists and create contemporary Australian work that reflects Brisbane and Australia to share with our audiences. We are proud to say we continue to nurture and develop the best new local talent and partner with some of the most exciting and diversely talented companies in Australia,” said Todd MacDonald, CEO & Artistic Director of La Boite.

Single Asian Female (11 Feb – 4 Mar)

Written by Michelle Law (WINNER of the 2016 Queensland Premier’s Young Publishers and Writers Award), Single Asian Female will premiere at La Boite. Set on the Sunshine Coast, the comedy explores gender and race in contemporary Australia.

The Village (15 May – 19 May)

The Village is a verbatim storytelling of refugees and asylum seekers, which has been developed in collaboration with the resettlement agency MDA Ltd. It tells of the strength and courage of the men, women, and children who now call Australia their new home.

Lady Beatle (25 May – 3 Jun)

Off the back of the highly successful impersonation cabaret shows Wrecking Ball and Rumour Has It, comes the premiere of Lady Beatle. From collaborators Naomi Price (The Voice Australia) and Adam Brunes, Lady Beatle celebrates and reinterprets some of the Beatles biggest hits through the lens of the women who inspired the songs.

Blackrock (22 Jul – 12 Aug)

In a collaboration with La Boite and QUT Creative Industries, where final year Acting students will work with an ensemble of professional actors to present Blackrock by Nick Enright. Inspired by the murder of Leigh Leigh in Stockton, Australia in 1989, the iconic play was turned into a feature film.

Laser Beak Man (9 Sept – 30 Sept)

In a collaboration with Dead Puppet Society (The Wider Earth, The Harbinger), La Boite will present the new adaptation of visual artist Tim Sharp’s Laser Beak Man. The work will feature live music by Sam Cromack and will premiere as part of the Brisbane Festival.

One The Bear (10 Oct – 21 Oct)

Candy Bowers, Busty Beatz and visual artist Jason Wing, worked in conjunction with Campbelltown Community Arts Centre and Black Honey Company to premiere One with the Bear. A fusion of fairytale and hip-hop, One with the Bear will be presenting entirely in rhyme and explores a number of social issues including conformity, peer pressure, diversity and gender.

An exciting and diverse season packed with premiere productions, La Boite is committed to providing a platform for emerging and established artists to develop their work. For the second year, La Boite will present La Boite HWY, which is an initiative and mini festival to workshop and present ideas, which is programmed for 12 – 24 June, and will be headlined by La Boite’s Artist-in-Residence. In 2017 these artists include Digi Youth Arts, Black Honey Company, and Steven Oliver.
