King Kong: Back in Oz for one more round of workshops

AussieTheatre.com understands that King Kong – Live On Stage will undergo a final round of workshops before hitting theatres in 2013.

Produced by Global Creatures (the company which brought us Walking With Dinosaurs), the show is scheduled to be workshopped again in mid 2012, and rehearsals for the main stage production are set to begin sometime in 2013. The most recent workshop took place in July 2011, and this full year break will allow the writers to iron out any kinks in the story and put the finishing touches on what promises to be a beautiful production.

The show is set to boast a cast of more than 45 onstage singers, dancers, actors and puppeteers – making it a wonderful opportunity for many Australian performers in the coming years. It is understood that artists who are engaged in the final workshop will also be involved in the production in 2013.

Set in 1933, the show will feature both original and period music, with a score by Marius de Vries. Directed by Daniel Kramer and choreographed by John O’Connell, the King Kong is sure to be a spectacle.

King Kong is the latest in a line of productions which have announced for workshop and production in Australia, lending weight to the notion that ‘Down Under’ has become the new Off-Off Broadway try out. Dr Zhivago, An Officer and a Gentleman, Strictly Ballroom, and Dream Lover are also on the list.
