&Juliet flips the script on Shakespeare’s love story

Global hit musical & Juliet reimagines Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet by asking one simple question: What if Juliet chose her own ending?

Presented by the 2026 graduating class and second year students of Elder Conservatorium Music Theatre, & Juliet takes over Adelaide University’s Scott Theatre from Thursday 8 October to Sunday 11 October.

Instead of dying for Romeo, Juliet chooses to live, embarking on a journey of self-discovery with her friends, new and old. Guided (and sometimes manipulated) by Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway, Juliet navigates love, identity and independence in the clever and topical performance.

 

 

Directing the production is Matt Hyde who brings his firsthand experience from the world premiere of & Juliet in London in 2019, where Hyde was Casting Associate at Stuart Burt Casting.

Hyde :

My goal isn’t to recreate what came before, but to honour the spirit of what made & Juliet such a phenomenon in the first place.

At its heart, it’s a timeless story that asks a question we can all relate to: if you didn’t like the story you’d been handed, would you have the courage to rewrite it? That’s a powerful idea whether you’re sixteen or sixty.

The scale of the production adds to the intrigue with a cast of 45 students, which is more than double the size of the original West End production.

]That brings an incredible energy to the show, but it also means every rehearsal has to be meticulously planned and everyone needs to work together as one company.

& Juliet is written by Emmy-winning writer David West Read, who also wrote Schitt’s Creek. The performance is set to an exciting soundtrack of iconic pop hits by Swedish producer Max Martin and Friends, including ‘Since U Been Gone’, ‘I Want It That Way’, and ‘…Baby One More Time’, among many more.

Actor and third-year Bachelor of Music Theatre student Allycia Angeles, who plays Juliet:

This show is so spectacular and glamorous. It celebrates so many different aspects of love. It is hard not to be enamoured.

The show not only empowers the characters on stage, but also empowers the audience. You will either leave this show with a new sense of self or with so much joy in your heart.
