Judith Wright Centre Announces New Fresh Ground Artists-In-Residence

Fresh Ground Residency Program – Judith Wright Centre

Recently the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts revealed their new Fresh Ground Artists-in Residence.

Fresh Ground supports Queensland artists, collectives and companies to create high-calibre contemporary performance work able to entice, excite and inspire audiences.

The program allows artists to develop and present new work at all stages of development, from providing a space for initial creative development through to presenting a production in one of the Judith Wright Centre’s performance venues and assisting in developing and delivering strategies for touring works nationally and internationally.

Designed to assist in the development and delivery of new projects, Fresh Ground optimises the return on investment for artists by focusing on the long-term future of the work created and the artists creating it. As part of the initiative, four companies will now share in $35,000 of Fresh Ground funding and approximately $80,000 of in-kind support during residencies of six to eighteen months.

The four companies selected for Round 6 of the Residency Program are:

• COMPANY 2

David Carberry and Chelsea McGuffin will develop new circus work Sediment with musician/composer Ben Walsh.

• PHLUXUS2 DANCE COLLECTIVE

Nerida Matthaei, in collaboration with Gareth Belling, Elise May and Liesel Zink, will undertake initial development of a dance theatre installation inspired by photographs from Nerida’s grandfather, a WWII German paratrooper.

• NERIDAH WATERS, LISA FA’ALAFI & LUCAS STIBBARD

The three performers will begin work on their site-specific interactive performance work, Head Office.

• PRYING EYE PRODUCTIONS

Zaimon and Lizzie Vilmanis will develop their company’s first full-length dance work, White Porcelain Doll.

Recent participants include Casus, currently in the middle of five-month international tour of their premiere contemporary circus work Knee Deep and Lisa Wilson, whose dance theatre production Lake premiered at the Judith Wright Centre in 2012 and has recently been selected for a national Road Work tour in 2014 through Performing Lines.

As part of an ongoing Fresh Ground residency, The Danger Ensemble premiered their contemporary performance work Sons of Sin in May, attracting their strongest audience numbers to date and are currently creating their next work The Wizard of Oz, as part of Brisbane Festival 2013.

This year the Judith Wright Centre has expanded Fresh Ground to also include the Space Program, providing artists with access to rehearsal spaces and limited technical equipment and support during standard venue operating hours.

Applications are now accepted on an ongoing basis and all artists, collectives and companies are invited to apply.
