Jonathan Biggins returns to host Helpmann Awards

It was announced today that Jonathan Biggins (pictured), actor, writer, director, political satirist and broadcaster will host the 2011 Helpmann Awards ceremony at the Sydney Opera House on Monday 1 August.

This year will marks the 11th presentation of the Helpmann Awards, which recognise distinguished artistic achievement and excellence in the many disciplines of Australia’s vibrant live performance sectors, including musical theatre, contemporary music, comedy, opera, classical music, theatre, dance and physical theatre.

Jonathan Biggins is no stranger to the Helpmann Awards, having hosted the Ceremony several times before, and also winning a Helpmann Award for Best Director for his production of Avenue Q. Jonathan has worked with all of Australia’s leading theatre companies and for some time was host of the afternoon program on Radio 702. He has extensive film and television credits and is well known for his writing, both as a journalist and playwright.

The Helpmann Awards have become a the pinnacle industry event for Australia’s live performance industry, which attracts more than 15 million people to shows across the nation each year. The ceremony also incorporates the presentation of the JC Williamson Award for outstanding contribution to the Australian live performance industry. This year, the JC Williamson Award will be presented to Australia’s Leading Ladies of Theatre: Nancye Hayes, Toni Lamond and Jill Perryman.

Nominees for the 2011 Awards will be announced at a media launch held concurrently in Melbourne and Sydney on Monday 4 July.

For the second time the Helpmann Awards will be broadcast live and exclusive on the arts channel STVDIO going out to viewers around the country on channel 132 on FOXTEL and AUSTAR with Red Carpet commencing at 7.30pm and the Ceremony from 8pm.

Tickets go on sale to the general public for this exciting event at 9am on Tuesday 28 June and can be purchased from the Sydney Opera House Box Office.
