Earlier this week, it was announced that a Fun Home film adaptation is in the works, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Sam Gold attached as creatives.
Gyllenhaal is set to star as Bruce Bechdel, the father of lead role Alison, and the film will be produced through his company Nine Stories Productions. No stranger to theatre, Jake has recently performed in Sunday in the Park With George (George), Little Shop of Horrors (Seymour), Sea Wall/A Life (Abe), and Constellations (Roland).
Broadway director Sam Gold, who won a Tony award for his direction of the original production of Fun Home, is set to direct the film.
Fun Home is a stage adaptation of Alison Bechdel’s 2006 graphic memoir. With book and lyrics by Lisa Kron (2.5 Minute Ride, Well) and music by Jeanine Tesori (Caroline, or Change, Shrek The Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Violet), the show follows Alison through different stages of her life, discovering her sexuality, and her relationship with her parents. The show is the first Broadway musical with a lesbian protagonist. It won a slew of awards, including 5 Tony Awards (Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, Best Leading Actor, Best Director).
The stage show is playing in both Melbourne and Sydney later this year.
