Iconic items celebrating ARIA Hall of Famers Jet are now showing at the Australian Music Vault

An exciting look into the meteoric career of Jet is on offer at the Australian Music Vault from 15 November – 1 April in celebration of their induction to the Australian Recording Industry Association’s (ARIA), Hall of Fame.

For the first time, audiences will be able to see the instruments, garments and artefacts that coloured Jet’s incredible arrival on the international stage. The Melbourne-based band shot to fame in 2003 with their debut album Get Born, which featured hit single ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl.’

The album won six ARIA Awards and was certified nine times platinum in Australia, making it one of the top five highest-selling Australian rock albums of all time.

We’re very excited and feel very lucky that Jet has been willing to loan us key objects from their personal collection for the duration of the display. It’s not every day that we get to include the very tools of their trade.

It marks 20 years since Jet first burst onto the scene and it’s a real treat to revisit such iconic objects.

The Australian Music Vault’s ongoing partnership with ARIA continues to provide access and insights into Australia’s diverse music history. The display includes Mark Wilson’s electric bass guitar, Cameron Muncey’s AC/DC shirt and leather jacket from the ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’ music video, Chris Cester’s drumhead, rare CD’s – vinyl, artwork and more.

Celebrating ARIA Hall of Fame inductees with a new display is usually an annual event – the pandemic disrupted that tradition somewhat over the past couple of years, so it’s exciting to be back working with musicians face-to-face and real-life objects.

Jet have been enthusiastic and generous in sharing access to their personal collection. The band always had a stripped back, bold aesthetic which absolutely comes through in this year’s installation. It’s very rock ‘n roll!.

Jet joins an esteemed list of ARIA Hall of Famers that includes Human Nature, Kylie Minogue, John Farnham, Olivia Newton John OAM and INXS. The band consists of brothers Nic Cester (vocals, guitar) and Chris Cester (vocals, drums), together with Cameron Muncey (vocals, guitar) and Mark Wilson (bass).

Foundation members Nic Cester and Mark Wilson provided insight into the ARIA Awards recognition, the Australian Music Vault display and the video that put Jet on TV screens across the globe.

Nic Cester, vocals – guitarist:

It’s surreal and exciting! We’re all quite chuffed and honoured to be in such esteemed company. We’re feeling humbled to receive this recognition.

When director Robert Hales came to us with the concept of a clip (Are You Gonna Be My Girl?), that incorporated the black and white line drawings from the artwork of Get Born, we knew we had found our collaborator, said Mark Wilson, bass-guitarist.

His concept was to bring the artwork to life with computer generated drawings. He called in favours from some heavy hitters, including Sam Bayer, (director of Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ video), as Director of Photography.

Wilson:

We shot the shot video on a sound stage in Los Angeles on a hot summer’s day. We’d never seen anything on this scale and the inclusion of a craft services (catering) unit blew our minds. The clip stands up to this day as an iconic timeless clip that we are still very proud of.
