Musical theatre and cabaret has a new home. Sydney’s Potts Point is set to explode as a major player when the brand-new Independent Music Theatre (IMT) takes over the stage of the Reginald Murphy Hall – currently known as the Darlinghurst Theatre.
Get ready to know IMT, because they just became incredibly important in the Sydney music theatre ecosystem, challenging themselves to create a hub for artists to share knowledge, resources, and to create, develop, and nurture new work in musical theatre and cabaret.
They are a collaborative partnership between several notable organisations that currently make or facilitate music theatre, cabaret, and small scale musicals: Luckiest Productions (David and Lisa Campbell and Richard Carroll); Neglected Musicals (Michelle Guthrie); Squabbalogic (Jay James-Moody and Jessica Burns) Neil Gooding Productions (Neil Gooding); and independent producers Michael Huxley (Debbie Does Dallas) and Simone Parrott (Priscilla Queen of the Desert – The Musical).
“We are creating a home for music theatre and cabaret. This will allow writers, directors, musical directors, choreographers, performers and designers to develop not only new work but also specifically tailored small scale musical theatre from Australia, Broadway and The West End,” said Neil Gooding, IMT Company Director.
David Campbell adds, “We will present a range of performances including new musicals, re-imagined classics, small scale new work from Australia and overseas, cabaret, children’s productions and connect with an already established audience.”
“This intimate venue gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy an up close and personal style of music theatre.”
In the coming weeks, Independent Music Theatre will announce a renaming of the venue and plans for the future. Stay tuned for more from this promising, potentially scene-reviving force.
