Flood problems dog QPAC

Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) has advised patrons that part of the 2011 program at the Playhouse will be rescheduled due to flood damage.

Three of the four QPAC theatres – the Concert Hall, Lyric and Cremorne Theatres – are operating as usual.

The delay in re-opening the Playhouse means that the seasons of Carmen (Queensland Ballet) and Pygmalion (Queensland Theatre Company) must be re-scheduled.

QPAC Chief Executive John Kotzas said the Playhouse suffered significant damage to its fire, air conditioning and electrical systems located in the sub-basement.

“The decision to reschedule the season was a difficult one which was forced on us due to fire safety certification requirements,” he said.

“Almost three metres of water inundated the low-lying areas at the Playhouse end of QPAC.  Although the auditorium and public areas were not affected, the vital services system was exposed to flood water for an extended period.  This meant access to the building was impossible until recently.

“We continue to wait for the supply of essential services and materials, as do many other Queensland businesses during this period of heightened need.

“The Playhouse is a priority for us and we are working closely with our contractor, Bovis Lend Lease, to ensure we can re-open as soon as possible. Arts  Queensland, Queensland Ballet and Queensland Theatre Company have worked collaboratively to find solutions for patrons.  We will be in contact with ticket holders over the coming days with up-to-date information regarding rescheduled performances.

“I would like to personally thank our patrons, partners , sponsors and staff for their patience, understanding and ongoing support.” 

QPAC’s ticketing arm, qtix, will manage the massive task of contacting patrons and relocating thousands of tickets for those shows affected.  This will take some time and patrons are asked to please refrain from contacting qtix as lines will be congested.
