Final LION KING Casting Announced
The Australian return of THE LION KING continues to gather momentum, with a major cast announcement revealing both a formidable new addition and a richly diverse ensemble set to bring the Pride Lands to life on stage.
Announced today, Australian stage and screen actor Daniel Frederiksen will step into the role of Scar. A performer with extensive experience across film, television, and leading theatre companies around the country, Frederiksen takes on one of musical theatre’s most iconic villains. Scar is a role that demands vocal precision, psychological depth, and an ability to balance menace with charisma, and Frederiksen’s breadth of work positions him as a compelling choice to explore the character’s darker complexities.
Joining Frederiksen is an expansive ensemble of performers whose collective experience and cultural diversity reflect the global influence and African inspired roots of the production. The ensemble includes Shugri Abdi, Mario Acosta-Cevallos, Claire Abaijah-Griffin, Tara Bajan, Evangeline Batucan, Sophie Dadge, Ed Deganos, Leorate Dibatana, Junior Dilape, Matt Domingo, Joe Gaudion, Mukelisiwe Goba, Chaska Halliday, Jayme-Lee Hanekom, Annie-Lenore Hanman, Hamish Johnston, Khaya Mniki, Iteboge Modipane, Kearabetswe Mogotsi, Steven Mokone, Lwazi Mzimase, Buhle Nkomo, Rania Potaka-Osborne, Jack Rowan, Jacob Rozario, Laila Salloum, Asmara Soekotjo, Chemon Theys, Clifford Tlomatsana, Dean Vince, Tarisai Vushe, Brendan Xavier, Asemahle Xenti and Angel Zum.
Together, this ensemble will support the principal cast in delivering the scale, physical storytelling, and rhythmic precision that have become hallmarks of the production. From sweeping movement sequences to the intricate puppetry that defines the show’s visual language, the ensemble plays a central role in transforming the stage into the vast landscapes of the African savannah.

The ensemble cast joins a group of principal performers previously announced, each bringing fresh energy and personal history to their roles. Buyi Zama returns to lead the cast as Rafiki, reprising the iconic role for a third time in Australia. Zama’s association with the production has made her a defining presence in the show’s local legacy, with her performance widely praised for its vocal power, spiritual grounding, and emotional authority.
Nick Afoa also returns to the production, this time as Mufasa. Having made his theatre debut twelve years ago as Simba, Afoa’s journey from son to father on stage adds an extra layer of resonance to his casting. His Mufasa is expected to combine warmth, strength, and gravitas, anchoring the story’s emotional core and reinforcing the generational themes at the heart of the musical.
Completing the principal cast is a lineup of performers who bring both comic timing and dramatic weight to the production. Benn Welford takes on the role of the ever loyal Zazu, while Aphiwe Nyezi stars as Simba, charting the character’s journey from curious cub to reluctant king. Emily Nkomo appears as Nala, bringing strength and clarity to a role that balances compassion with determination.
Comedy favourites Timon and Pumbaa will be played by Jamie McGregor and Rutene Spooner respectively, a pairing tasked with delivering much of the show’s humour while also underscoring its emotional turning points. The hyenas are brought to life by Ezra Williams as Shenzi, Winston Hillyer as Banzai, and Mat Verevis as Ed, each contributing to the chaotic energy and physical comedy that make the trio such memorable antagonists.
Since its debut, THE LION KING has remained one of the most influential and visually striking productions in musical theatre history. Its fusion of Julie Taymor’s groundbreaking direction, Elton John and Tim Rice’s score, and a design aesthetic that blends traditional African performance elements with contemporary theatre craft has seen it resonate with audiences across generations.
This latest Australian cast announcement reinforces the production’s commitment to both excellence and representation. The diversity of the ensemble and principal performers not only reflects the world of the story but also the contemporary Australian stage, where global perspectives and lived experience continue to enrich theatrical storytelling.
As rehearsals progress and anticipation builds, this new cast promises to honour the legacy of THE LION KING while offering audiences a reinvigorated interpretation of a modern classic. With a mix of returning favourites, rising stars, and accomplished performers stepping into iconic roles, the production is poised to once again remind audiences why this story of identity, responsibility, and belonging continues to endure.
