It’s back, and more twisted than ever!
Music theatre’s most loved fundraising event is returning to Melbourne this year after sold out shows in 2010, 2011 and 2012, and it’s going to be bigger and better than ever.
Twisted Broadway, presented by The Benge Group and Kate Macdonald, will be held on July 22 at Arts Centre Melbourne’s Playhouse Theatre featuring some of Australia’s hottest musical theatre performers. With all proceeds going to Oz Showbiz Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, this twisted evening of gender bended, re-imagined performances of contemporary and classical musical numbers is set to thrill audiences for the fourth year running.
The producers have today confirmed that Helpmann Award Nominated performer Erika Heynatz (Legally Blonde) will be co-hosting the event with music theatre veteran Trevor Ashley. Ashley, no stranger to gender-bending in leading (female) roles including Edna Turnvald in Hairspray and Natalie Portly in pantomime Fat Swan has just returned from the West End where he performed his cabaret show Liza (on an E).
This year’s show is set to feature performers from Australia’s biggest musicals (King Kong, Legally Blonde the Musical, Wicked and many more) who will all perform numbers originally written for the opposite gender. In support of In support of Twisted Broadway, Arts Centre Melbourne have generously donated the use of the their Playhouse venue free of charge so that all funds raised from the event can be passed on to Oz Showbiz Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
On average, 20 people are diagnosed with HIV every week in Australia and over 50 per cent of those living with HIV/AIDS live under the poverty line. Oz Showbiz Cares/Equity Fights AIDS demonstrates the Australian entertainment industry’s dedication to those living with and those touched by HIV/AIDS.
