Disney’s The Lion King Begins Rehearsals for 2026 Sydney Season

Rehearsals are officially underway for the 2026 Australian production of Disney’s The Lion King, with the cast gathering on Monday 23 February ahead of the show’s highly anticipated return to Sydney’s Capitol Theatre in April.

The company marked the first day of rehearsals with a stirring performance of Circle of Life, led by Buyi Zama, offering audiences a glimpse of the scale and spirit that has made the production a global phenomenon. Footage released from the rehearsal room also features Aphiwe Nyezi, who will take on the iconic role of Simba, speaking about stepping into one of musical theatre’s most celebrated leading roles.

Opening on Saturday 18 April, the 2026 season marks a major milestone for Australian audiences. Ten years after the musical was last staged locally, this will be the third Australian production of the internationally acclaimed Disney hit. The original Australian premiere took place at the Capitol Theatre in October 2003, followed by a second national tour that opened in Sydney in December 2013.

Globally, The Lion King remains the world’s number one musical, having been seen by more than 124 million people worldwide. Its blend of African inspired music, innovative staging and Julie Taymor’s visionary direction has cemented its reputation as one of the most beloved productions in theatrical history.

Returning to the Capitol Theatre, the 2026 season promises both nostalgia and renewal, introducing a new generation of performers to Australian audiences while reigniting the spectacle that has captivated millions across the globe.
