Dirty Dancing set to return to Australia, 2014

It’s been 10 years since the world premiere of Dirty Dancing opened in Sydney at the Theatre Royal and today producer John Frost has confirmed that the show will return to Australia to celebrate an incredible decade.

Based on the 1987 film starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray, the live production of Dirty Dancing opened in Sydney in 2004 and played an 18 month sell-out season throughout Australia and New Zealand before making its mark on the world. A new production in Hamburg, Germany broke records for achieving the largest advance in European theatre history, and in London the production began previews with  £11 Million in advance sales in 2006.

“Dirty Dancing has been an amazing worldwide success,” said John Frost today.

“The 1987 film was a massive hit, and the original movie soundtrack contains some of the most loved songs of all time. The stage musical gave audiences the chance to hear these songs performed live and to experience the breathtaking dance routines. People flocked to it, breaking records all around the world.”

AussieTheatre can confirm that this 10th anniversary production will open at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre in late 2014 and auditions for the production will commence very soon. This will see Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom bump out of the Lyric before the end of 2014, in preparation for its transfer to Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne in January 2015.

Dirty Dancing launched a hugely successful nationwide tour across the UK and Ireland in 2011, then returned to London at the Piccadilly Theatre. A new UK tour launched in Bristol in March this year and the show is currently touring Germany (again) and productions will open shortly in France and Italy. A new multi-city North American tour will also open in August this year in Washington DC, before touring to 30 cities across the continent, introducing this wonderful story to a new generation around the world.

Featuring hit songs including ‘Hungry Eyes’, ‘Hey! Baby, Do You Love Me?’ and the iconic ‘(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life’, Dirty Dancing has become one of the most popular musical productions of all time, breaking records around the world and proving that nobody puts baby in a corner.
