Designs Unveiled for Canberra’s New Lyric Theatre Inspired by Natural Landmarks
The ACT Government has revealed detailed designs for Canberra’s long-awaited new lyric theatre, a landmark venue set to transform the city’s cultural landscape.
The theatre, which will seat up to 2,000 people, is being designed to host major musicals, ballets and operas, with a state-of-the-art orchestra pit that can be adapted to suit different performance sizes.
Inspired by Nature and Culture
According to Chief Minister Andrew Barr, the design draws on Canberra’s natural landmarks and pays tribute to First Nations culture through the use of natural forms and textures.
“This will be a significant venue for Canberra — providing the scale and sophistication needed to attract world-class performances,” Mr Barr said. “The design responds to the needs of audiences, performers and staff alike, guided by extensive community consultation.”
Accessibility has been a key focus of the project. Plans include equitable building access, accessible seating on every level, and more restrooms than required by code, including all-gender facilities.
Site and Construction
The new venue will rise on the site of the current Theatre Lane car park, located north-west of the existing Canberra Theatre Centre, near Northbourne Avenue and Vernon Circle. The car park will close from next month to allow for early works, with major construction expected to commence early next year.
The designs have been released as part of the main Works Approval application lodged with the National Capital Authority, marking a major milestone for the project.
A New Era for the Arts in Canberra
When completed, the lyric theatre is expected to cement Canberra’s status as a destination for international and national touring productions, filling a long-identified gap in the city’s cultural infrastructure.
“This project is about giving Canberrans a theatre they can be proud of — one that celebrates our identity while opening the door to some of the world’s greatest performances,” Mr Barr said.
