Cats back in Australia

Mystical Cats - The cast of Cats perform the opening number

One of the most adored musicals in world history is back in Australia.

Cats has returned after a 14 year absence, playing its first preview in Adelaide last night at the Festival Theatre. It plays there until January 24, before touring the nation.

Officially, Cats opens in Adelaide on Sunday night.

Ticket sales for the Adelaide season of Catshave now passed 40,000.

The 2009/2010 Australian tour of Cats has taken more than $14 million at the box office with this production recently completing a seven city tour of China. Following Adelaide the show will tour to Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.

The show features an Australian and New Zealand cast and crew of 53 including a live band who have been performing to capacity houses across Asia since 2006.

Regarded as a musical theatre phenomenon, Cats is a song and dance spectacular featuring a magnificent musical score composed by the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber, including the poignant hit song ‘Memory’, a fantastical set, inspired choreography and mischievous feline costumes and makeup.

Seen by over 73 million people worldwide, Cats first opened in London in May 1981 to rave reviews and went on to win a record-breaking number of awards internationally including two Olivier Awards for ‘Musical of the Year’ and ‘Outstanding Achievement of the Year in Musicals’, and seven Tony Awards. It has held the record of the longest-running musical in West End history playing for 21 years. In addition Cats played 18 years on Broadway and has been presented in over 26 countries, in about three hundred cities, in fourteen languages.

Cats is produced by The Really Useful Company Asia Pacific and is presented in Australia in association with Lunchbox Theatrical Productions and David Atkins Enterprises.
