Brisbane Enthralled by ‘TINA: The Tina Turner Musical’ at QPAC

The Tina Turner Musical has captivated Brisbane audiences at QPAC’s Lyric Theatre, showcasing stunning visuals, powerhouse performances, and an emotional journey through Tina Turner’s life.

The show is a perfect blend of theatre and concert, transporting the audience from Turner’s childhood in Nutbush, Tennessee, through pivotal moments of her life with an in-depth and heartfelt narrative. One highlight was the audience chanting “TINA, TINA” before the lead actress began “The Best,” creating a moment of city pride as the crowd sang along, reminiscent of an NRL anthem.

The production dazzled with lights, fireworks, and smoke machines, evoking the atmosphere of a real Tina Turner concert. The set design, actors, choreography, singing, and costumes were exceptional, with outfits featuring sequins, fringing, denim jackets, and leather dresses.

Beyond the stunning visuals and high-energy performances, the show was deeply emotional, depicting Turner’s hardships and resilience. The musical seamlessly wove Turner’s biggest hits into the storyline, enhancing the narrative.

The lead actress captured Turner’s mannerisms, iconic dance moves, and distinct accent, delivering a powerful vocal performance and impressive acting, especially in scenes with Ike. The actor portraying Ike Turner delivered a phenomenal performance, convincingly depicting one of the most unlikeable characters on stage. Another standout performance came from the actress playing Alline, whose cheeky demeanor and infectious giggle provided much-needed moments of levity.

Despite minor microphone issues and slightly subdued vocal power at times, the overall magnificence of the performances shone through. Audience members left the theatre expressing their joy and amazement, describing the show as “unbelievable” and “terrific.”

“TINA: The Tina Turner Musical” is an emotional rollercoaster, filled with exceptional performances and stunning visuals. It’s a powerful tribute to Tina Turner’s legacy, leaving audiences uplifted and inspired. This must-see production at QPAC’s Lyric Theatre is simply the best.
