Belvoir’s Death of a Salesman transfers to the Theatre Royal

Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman is considered one of the finest plays in the modern canon, and Simon Stone’s sold-out production at the Belvoir St Theatre in Sydney is making waves. Responding to high demand, it is now set to transfer to the Theatre Royal (recent home of Jersey Boys) for two weeks from 23 October 2012.

“We have been overwhelmed by the audience’s response to Death of a Salesman,” said Belvoir’s General Manager, Brenna Hobson.

“People are queuing from 7am to buy day seats and standing room and we are thrilled to have this opportunity to meet the demand.”

Death of a Salesman won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1949 and the Tony Award for Best Play. Widely seen as Miller’s indictment of capitalism and the American Dream, at its heart Death of a Salesman is the story of a man past his prime, struggling with his failings and the dashed hopes that his sons would achieve more in their adult lives than he has in his own.

Colin Friels is set to continue in the leading role of the salesman himself, Willy Loman, and most of the cast will also transfer with the production. Patrick Brammall, Genevieve Lemon, Hamish Michael and Luke Mullins will all make their way to the Theatre Royal; Paula Arundell will replace Blazey Best for the final week at Belvoir and the Theatre Royal run.

Tickets for the Belvoir St Theatre season went on sale on Monday 14 May. Belvoir set a new record for sales in a day with over 1600 tickets sold. The season was fully booked from its opening week.
