Stage School Australia is delighted to announce an open call for auditions for its January 2026 production of Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical JR.
Following on from the recent success of Mary Poppins JR in July, Stage School delighted to be bringing yet another musical to life for the first time.
Matilda The Musical JR. is the spirited, witty and heart-warming story of an extraordinary little girl with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind who dares to take a stand. Full of bold characters, show-stopping numbers and high-energy ensemble moments, Matilda The Musical JR. celebrates the power of imagination, friendship and standing up for what’s right.
With music and lyrics by Australia’s own Tim Minchin and a Tony Award-winning book by Dennis Kelly, this junior adaptation offers a fantastic range of roles for singers, dancers and actors to shine – from cheeky school kids and outrageous grown-ups to the powerful ensembles that drive the action. This show has captivated audiences worldwide with its mix of humour, high-energy dance numbers and unforgettable songs including Naughty, Revolting Children and When I Grow Up to name a few.
Producer, Corey Smark, said:
We are thrilled to be bringing such an iconic piece of theatre to the stage this January. Our cast will have the opportunity to collaborate with an outstanding creative team to bring this story to life. Personally, I am especially excited to work with the future generations of Australian theatre. Melbourne is home to so much young talent, and it’s a privilege to help nurture and showcase it.
Stage School Australia is seeking over 90 talented young performers aged 10 to 18 years from across Melbourne to bring Roald Dahl’s characters to life. This is a rare opportunity for emerging talent to perform in a full-scale musical with professional direction and production value.
Rehearsals will take place in Brunswick and Hawthorn, with performances held at the Cripps Centre in St Kilda East from 14 – 17 January, 2026.
Auditions will be via online submission, and must close 28 September 2025.
Tickets will go on sale 7 November, 2025.
