Each year, thousands of hopefuls get down to business in a series of auditions for Australia’s top performing arts courses, usually held between October and November. Entrance into these courses is always highly competitive, with places strictly limited.

Anyone who is serious about studying full time at institutions like NIDA, WAAPA and VCA will be thinking about how best to prepare for their auditions and how they can stand out from the competition -an important skill to carry into a successful career.

A rare opportunity is on offer to learn the craft from one of the world’s most seasoned stage and screen performers, Philip Quast (Les Miserables, Sweeney Todd, Sunday In The Park With George).

Philip is pairing up with performer and teacher Robert Bertram (Phantom of the Opera, Keating! The Musical, Jekyll and Hyde) to run an intensive week-long workshop program catering for professional performers looking to develop their acting ability; actors who are not confident with their singing ability and for those aspiring to study at NIDA, WAAPA, VCA or similar.

“As a young guy wanting to perform in musical theatre at the highest level I used to watch Philip and try to work out how he did what he did. Because lets face it, there is no doubt that he is as good as it gets!”, Bertram told AussieTheatre this week.

“As a teacher he is warm and supportive, but also incredibly detailed and focused. Being in a room with Philip Quast for a week is one hell of an opportunity.”

The course uses music to connect all performing disciplines including Film, Television, Classical Theatre and Musical Theatre. Each day of the 5 day workshop will consist of 8 hours of intense masterclass with detailed analysis and practice of acting in song, development of singing technique and music theatre group numbers, as well as work on Shakespeare, duets and acting scenes.

The course will be held at NIDA (Anzac Pde, Sydney) between 22nd – 26th September, 2014.

Course participation is subject to application and places are limited to 20 people.
