Asia’s edgiest comedians are bringing Mardi Gras to Riverside Theatres

On 22nd February Riverside Theatres will present Spice Night, an evening of trailblazing, queer comedy from across Asia, as part of the 2020 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

Asia boasts the boldest, fastest growing, standup comedy scene in the world right now, Spice Night features four out-proud-and-hilarious Asian comedians who are breaking the rules and delighting audiences from Mumbai to Manila: Hirzi Zulkiflie (SIN), Joanne Kam (MYS), Navin Noronha (IND) and Margot Tanjutco (AUS-PHIL).

Zulkiflie is a Singaporean YouTube star, best known as being part of the comedy duo ‘Munah and Hirzi’. With a combined 150,000+ followers online, Zulkiflie creates Singaporean-based comedy content like his parody of Childish Gambino’s hit song This Is America, called This Is Singapore which has received close to 500,000 views.

Joanne Kam is known as the queen of Malaysian stand-up comedy. Mixing comedy with storytelling, no topic is off-limits in her famously raunchy act.

Navin Noronha is India’s only out gay comedian. Noronha co-hosts the weekly Keeping It Queer podcast which discusses everything from monogamy and marriage to gay pride month and the #MeToo movement.

Margot Tanjutco is an Australian-Filipino comedian, writer and actor. She was nominated for the Golden Gibbo at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2019 for her solo show Vanity Fair Enough, and also appeared as Juliet in the critically-acclaimed electropop lesbian musical Romeo Is Not The Only Fruit.

Hailing from countries where homosexuality still is or until recently was criminalised, these jokers are sharp, shameless and sure to have Riverside audiences in stitches. It should be illegal to be this funny, not this gay.

Riverside Theatres – Corner of Church and Market Sts, Parramatta
Saturday 22nd February at 7:00pm and 9:00pm
