Acting legend Bill Hunter passes away at 71

Australian acting legend, Bill Hunter, passed away on Saturday after a long battle with inoperable cancer.

Australian acting legend, Bill Hunter, passed away on Saturday after a long battle with inoperable cancer. The 71 year old star spent his final hours in a hospice in Melbourne, surrounded by family and friends. Hunter has been one of Australia’s most prolific actors appearing in more than 100 film and television productions in a career that has spanned over 50 years. The winner of 3 AFI awards and critically acclaimed for many performances including his roles in Muriel’s Wedding, Strictly Ballroom, Gallipoli and Australia. He has also, only recently, finished filming The Cup, a new movie chronicling the 2002 Melbourne Cup race in which Bill played the role of Bart Cummings.
It should also be mentioned that as well as being an extremely talented actor, Bill was selected for the 1960 Olympic swimming team. Unfortunately he had to later withdraw after contracting meningitis.
Bill will be greatly missed within the industry, and we here at AussieTheatre.com would like to send our deepest condolences to his family and close friends.
An open memorial service is being held at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne on Thursday, May 26 at 2pm. Friends, associates and fans are invited to attend to offer their farewells. We have included a short tribute put together by the movie network channels for your reflection.
