A Swan a Cat and a Fish: When the rain stops falling

What do a swan, a cat and a fish have in common?

Answer: The Black Swan Theatre company follows on from the success of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof , with a play that begins with a fish falling from the sky, in the Western Australian Premiere of the epic drama When the Rain Stops Falling.

Written by Perth born Andrew Bovell (best known for his award winning film Lantana and co writing the screenplay for Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom) The Sunday Telegraph describes his latest work as “a beautiful, profoundly moving drama.”

“I am very proud that Black Swan is presenting the WA premiere of this beautiful and poignant story of guilt, hope and truth in Andrew’s home state” said Artistic director, Kate Cherry,
When the Rain Stops Falling will play a short, two week season at the  Heath Ledger Theatre, State Theatre Centre of Western Australia. Previews start October 29 with opening night November 2. There will be a pre-show talk on Thursday 10 November, at 6.45pm and a post-show talk on Tuesday 8 November. Both talks will feature cast from the show.

The play is set thirty years in the future when the Earth has been ravaged by years of abuse. A fish falls from the sky landing at Gabriel York’s feet, an event predicted by his grandfather some 80 years earlier. Thus begins a play that weaves through four generations to tell a tale of betrayal, abandonment and love.

Adam Mitchell (The Laramie Project, Cabaret Soiree Series Downstairs at the Maj – Damaged, Ramblings of a Random Redhead, Dick Whittington – UK National Tour) directs a cast featuring Vivienne Garrett, Julia Moody, Fiona Pepper, Igor Sas, Scott Sheridan, Steve Turner and Alison van Reeken. Set and costumes are by Brain Woljen, lighting design Trent Suidgeest and sound design Ben Collins. AussieTheatre.com will be running a ticket giveaway for this play in the coming days – keep an eye out for the competition!
