The nominees for the coveted City of Newcastle Drama Association Awards (the CONDAs) have been
announced, with a record-breaking 177 nominations recognising the work produced by local theatre
makers. There were 71 productions submitted for the awards program this year, as 39 theatre
companies crammed in postponed productions from 2021, as well as new work scheduled for 2022.
President of the City of Newcastle Drama Association, Dr Shane Bransdon:
It has been an exceptionally busy year for the Newcastle theatre industry, with as many as seven shows being staged at the same time some weekends.
CONDA recognises excellence by local theatre practitioners in 27 award categories, including technical and design elements, performers for both musicals and plays, as well as directors, choreographers and musical directors.
This year, a new category was introduced to recognise the increasing participation of national actors
who are brought in to Newcastle productions as guest performers.
Dr Bransdon:
Newcastle is attracting national attention as an arts city, thanks to the quality work being produced in the region.
As a result, local producers are attracting talent from around Australia to work on Newcastle-based productions.
The winners will be announced at the CONDA Awards ceremony, sponsored by Out of the Square Media, the City of Newcastle and JH Productions, on the evening of Saturday 10 December at Newcastle City Hall.
