2012 Fresh Ground Recipients Named

This year’s successful applicants for the Judith Wright Centre’s Artist in Residence program, Fresh Ground, have just been announced.

The program aids to lay the foundations for Queensland Artists to build professional pathways through meaningful opportunities to create outstanding projects, from the ground up.

This supportive program uplifts independent artists, collectives and companies to foster new, exciting and high caliber contemporary work with the aim to inspire and entice audiences near and far.

The 6 successful applications, which feature about 30 independent performers, all share in the allocation of $35,000 worth of financial assistance and $120 000 in in-kind support. This support is offered by the professional staff at the Judith Wright Centre, and helps in the development of  works over a 6-18 month period.

The successful applicants and their projects include:

CHELSEA McGUFFIN
Forklift
Finnish Circus Artist Henna Kaikula and renowned circus artist Chelsea McGuffin collaborate on their creative development residency with acclaimed choreographer Kate Denborough.

THE DANGER ENSEMBLE
Various works
As a successful application this creative ensemble will gain ongoing access to rehearsal spaces and technical assistance as well as strategic planning support for the development of independent company to progress several major works over the next 18 months.

LISA WILSON
Wi-Fi Project (working title)
Fresh Ground
will support Lisa Wilson and composer Paul Charlier to develop an intermediate dance theatre work.  It will also assist this collaboration with national and international touring opportunities.

GIEMA CONTINI
Broken Heart Syndrome
Internationally renowned director Pia Furtado mentors a local ensemble of emerging talent under the provision of rehearsal space, technical and production support at the Judith Wright Centre.

CASUS
Doll’s House (working title)
Fresh Ground offers Casus assistance in planning a national tour for their premier work Knee Deep as well as 18month support focusing on development of new work Doll’s House for this Brisbane based company.

RON SEETO
inter/nality
This is an interdisciplinary fusion of dance and martial arts that will have 6 months supports in development and production.

In-house support also includes the use of technical equipment, rehearsal spaces and assistance in the development and implementations of business and strategic plans. A lot of the works included in this year’s residency include circus, dance, theatre and mixture of martial arts.
