Wicked London Stage Show Soars to Record Revenue

The West End production of Wicked has achieved record-breaking revenue, reporting a 4.5% increase to £27.8 million in 2023. The surge comes as excitement for the film adaptation propels interest in the stage show to new heights.

The Wicked movie, starring Ariana Grande and Jeff Goldblum, recently became the highest-earning musical adaptation of all time, grossing $634.4 million since its release in November, according to Box Office Mojo. This success has reignited enthusiasm for the stage show, which continues to captivate audiences at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre, where it has been running since 2006.

A Timeless Tale

Adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel, Wicked explores the backstory of the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch, following their unlikely friendship as university students in the magical land of Oz. First debuting in San Francisco in 2003, the production has since cast its spell worldwide, with over 12 million people experiencing it in London alone.

The show’s enduring popularity contrasts with a challenging environment for many West End productions. While Wickedsoared, other major shows have faced declining revenues. For example, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child recently reported an 8.6% revenue drop, resulting in a pre-tax loss of £876,003 for the year ending March 2024.

Financial Performance

Despite rising costs, Wicked London Production reported a £1.1 million pre-tax profit for the period ending December 31, 2023. While profit was down 37.5% compared to the previous year due to increased expenses—including a 7.9% rise in costs to £26.8 million and higher pay for its 151 staff—the production remains financially robust.

In nearly two decades, Wicked has only incurred losses twice: during its debut year, due to pre-opening expenses, and in 2020 when the pandemic temporarily halted performances.

The show’s directors remain committed to keeping the production on stage as long as it remains profitable, noting that the company faces competitive pressures to sustain its appeal. By consistently delivering a high-quality performance, Wickedhas cemented itself as a cornerstone of the West End.

A Cross-Media Phenomenon

Wicked’s operating company is owned by Comcast, the parent company of Universal Pictures, which produced the wildly successful film adaptation. The synergy between stage and screen has amplified the franchise’s reach, with audiences eagerly anticipating the sequel set to debut in November 2025.

As Wicked continues to enchant theatre-goers and movie fans alike, its dual presence on stage and screen underscores the timeless allure of this spellbinding tale. With record-breaking revenue and unwavering popularity, Wicked is proving its magic is as potent as ever.
