The highly anticipated Wicked film adaptation has given fans an exciting first look with a newly released behind-the-scenes featurette, paving the way for a full trailer debut this Wednesday.
Directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the Wicked film is based on the beloved Broadway and West End musical of the same name. The adaptation has been divided into two parts, with the first set to premiere in November 2024.
Adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, the story explores the origins of two unlikely friends at university in the land of Oz—one destined to become Glinda the Good, and the other the Wicked Witch of the West. The screenplay is a collaboration between original musical creators Winnie Holzman (book) and Stephen Schwartz (score).
This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the original Broadway production, which continues to thrive in its 18th year in the West End, having been seen by 11 million people. Additionally, a UK tour launched in late 2023, offering fans a chance to see the musical live on stage even before the film’s release.
The star-studded cast includes Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, Ethan Slater as Boq, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Bronwyn James as ShenShen, and Keala Settle as Miss Coddle. Peter Dinklage will lend his voice to the character of Doctor Dillamond.
Mark your calendars: Part one of the Wicked film is due for release on November 27, 2024, with part two following on November 26, 2025.
