Tim Curry, original Frank-N-Furter in THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, dies aged 80

Tim Curry, the actor who originated Frank-N-Furter in THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW before carrying the role to Broadway and film, has died aged 80. His longtime manager and friend, Marcia Hurwitz, told the Associated Press that Curry died peacefully at his home in Toluca Lake, Los Angeles, on Tuesday, 25 August 2026. No cause of death was disclosed. Beyond his defining role, his theatre record encompassed five Broadway productions and three Tony Award nominations.

The date was corrected after the Associated Press initially placed Curry’s death on Wednesday, 26 August. The news agency said his representative had supplied the wrong day. Its amended report and Hurwitz’s confirmation establish Tuesday, 25 August as the date of death.

Born in Cheshire, England, on 19 April 1946, Curry began his professional theatre career in London. His early work included the original London production of HAIR, where he worked with Richard O’Brien. That connection proved decisive: O’Brien would go on to write and perform in THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, providing Curry with the role that became central to his public image even as his later work moved far beyond it.

The Royal Court Theatre’s official archive records that THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW opened in its Theatre Upstairs on 19 June 1973. Curry was in the original cast as Frank-N-Furter, with O’Brien credited as writer and performer and Jim Sharman as director. The production established the essential sequence of Curry’s association with the character. Frank-N-Furter began as a role in a new London stage work, rather than on Broadway or in the film through which many later audiences encountered him.

Concord Theatricals records that the London production transferred through several venues before THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW opened at Broadway’s Belasco Theatre on 10 March 1975, starring Curry. His Broadway debut therefore continued a performance he had created in London. It also began a New York stage career that would eventually include four further productions and take Curry through both plays and musicals.

Also in 1975, Curry played Frank-N-Furter in THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. The distinction between the titles is important to his theatre legacy: THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW is the stage musical in which he originated the character, while THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW is the screen adaptation that turned the performance into his most enduring film role. The film did not supply the template for his stage performance. It preserved and extended work that had begun at the Royal Court two years earlier.

Playbill records THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW as the first of Curry’s five Broadway productions, but the remaining credits demonstrate how quickly his stage career moved beyond Frank-N-Furter. He subsequently played Tristan Tzara in TRAVESTIES and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in AMADEUS. He later returned to Broadway as Alan Swann in MY FAVORITE YEAR and King Arthur in SPAMALOT. That compact list spans three decades and places his best-known stage creation within a much broader body of theatrical work.

Three of those performances brought Tony Award nominations. The Tony Awards’ official database lists Curry for AMADEUS in 1981, MY FAVORITE YEAR in 1993 and SPAMALOT in 2005. He did not win a Tony Award. The dates nevertheless provide a clear measure of his Broadway longevity, with 24 years separating the first and third nominations. They also document recognition across a play and two musicals, rather than for repeated variations on the role that first made his name.

Curry’s screen career broadened his profile while retaining the emphasis on sharply defined character work evident in his theatre roles. His prominent film and television appearances included ANNIE, CLUE, LEGEND, the 1990 television adaptation of IT, HOME ALONE 2: LOST IN NEW YORK and MUPPET TREASURE ISLAND. Alongside those performances, he developed an extensive career in animation and voice work. That combination of stage, screen and vocal performance made range, rather than any single genre or medium, the more accurate frame for his career.

Curry suffered a major stroke in 2012 and subsequently used a wheelchair. He continued working and returned to the ROCKY HORROR material in Fox’s 2016 television production, this time as the Criminologist rather than Frank-N-Furter. The appearance allowed him to revisit the work without recreating the part he had originated more than four decades earlier. In 2025, he published his memoir, Vagabond.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Curry’s ANNIE co-star Carol Burnett and his original ROCKY HORROR colleague Patricia Quinn were among the first colleagues to respond publicly to news of his death. Their statements were reported during the initial wave of tributes. No verified funeral or memorial arrangements were included in the early reports.

The theatrical life of Frank-N-Furter had entered another Broadway chapter only months before Curry’s death. THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW returned to Broadway in March 2026 in a production directed by Sam Pinkleton and led by Luke Evans as Frank-N-Furter. The production’s precise performance status at the time of Curry’s death was not established, but the confirmed March return placed the character back on Broadway more than half a century after Curry first played the role at the Royal Court.

For Australian audiences, Curry’s legacy is visible through the work’s continued production history here. AussieTheatre covered a major 50th-anniversary Australian production of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW across 2023 and 2024, decades after Curry helped establish the musical in London. The Australian connection lies in that continuing stage life rather than in any verified local appearance by Curry. Together with the 2026 Broadway return, the anniversary production shows that Frank-N-Furter remains a living theatrical inheritance, interpreted by new performers and audiences long after Curry’s original performance moved from the Royal Court to Broadway and film.
