The Wiz Announces Broadway Comeback Schedule and Location

Prepare to be dazzled! ‘The Wiz’ is dancing its way back to the heart of Broadway! After creating waves with its national tour, this much-anticipated revival is set to light up the Marquis Theatre from 29 March 2024. And if you’re marking your diary, the grand opening night is just around the corner on 17 April. But, here’s the catch – it’s a limited engagement!

‘The Wiz’ is a soulful reinterpretation of L. Frank Baum’s classic ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,’ set within an African-American context. Young Dorothy from Harlem is whisked away to a magical world, where she meets the Scarecrow seeking brains, the Tin Man longing for a heart, and the Lion in search of courage. As they journey to the Emerald City to meet The Wiz, they confront the Wicked Witch Evillene and learn valuable lessons about self-belief and the true meaning of home.

Debuting on Broadway in 1975, ‘The Wiz’ was a groundbreaking success, clinching seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. This modern retelling, notable for its all-Black cast and vibrant blend of rock, soul, and R&B music, was later adapted into a 1978 film featuring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson.

This magical production emanated from Baltimore’s iconic Hippodrome Theatre on 23 September. Under the visionary direction of Schele Williams and the rhythmic genius of choreographer JaQuel Knight, with an extra dash of brilliance from Tony-nominee Amber Ruffin, this rendition promises to be legendary.

Swing to the symphonies crafted by maestros like Joseph Joubert and Allen René Louis. And get ready for a cast that’s set to steal your heart! Join Nichelle Lewis as she steps into Dorothy’s shoes, accompanied by the likes of Deborah Cox, Melody A. Betts, and Wayne Brady donning iconic roles. With a star-studded ensemble and casting by the acclaimed Tara Rubin, every moment promises to be iconic.

But what’s a show without its backdrop? Dive into an Oz recreated by Academy and Emmy award-winning designers like Hannah Beachler and Sharen Davis. With an ensemble of other talented artisans, this revival guarantees a feast for your eyes and ears.

This fresh take on L. Frank Baum’s classic is enriched with the melodies of legends like Luther Vandross and Timothy Graphenreed. And for those who remember the 1975 original that swept away seven Tony Awards, this rendition will be a nostalgic trip down the yellow brick road.

With powerhouse producers like Elizabeth Armstrong, James L. Nederlander, and MC Lyte, to name a few, and spearheaded by the dynamic trio of Kristin Caskey, Mike Isaacson, and Brian Anthony Moreland, ‘The Wiz’ is not just a show – it’s an experience.
